◆1978 में जनता सरकार द्वारा शुरू की गई रोलिंग प्लान (1978-83) को समाप्त करके छठी पंचवर्षीय योजना प्रारंभ की गयी थी।
◆इस योजना का मूल उद्देश्य 'गरीबी हटाना' था।
◆योजना का उद्देश्य आर्थिक और तकनीकी आत्मनिर्भरता प्राप्त करना, रोजगार सृजन करना और अति गरीबों के जीवन की गुणवत्ता में सुधार करना था।
◆इस योजना के दौरान भारतीय अर्थव्यवस्था ने सभी क्षेत्रों में प्रगति की थी और अधिकांश लक्ष्यों को प्राप्त कर लिया गया था, हालांकि 1984-85 के दौरान देश के कई हिस्सों में गंभीर सूखे की स्थिति का सामना करना पड़ा था।
◆5. 2% की लक्षित वृद्धि दर के मुकाबले 5. 7% की वार्षिक वृद्धि दर प्राप्त की गई थी।
◆इस योजना के दौरान ‘समन्वित ग्रामीण विकास कार्यक्रम’(आईआरडीपी) और ‘न्यूनतम आवश्यकता कार्यक्रम’(एमएनपी) शुरू किए गए थे।

◆The sixth five year plan was started after terminating the Rolling Plan (1978-83) started by the Janata Government in 1978.
◆The basic objective of this Plan was ‘Removal of Poverty’.
◆The plan aimed at achieving economic and technological self-reliance, generating employment and improving the quality of life of the poorest.
◆The Indian economy made all round progress during this plan and most of the targets were realized, though during 1984-85 many parts of the country faced severe drought conditions.
◆Annual growth rate of 5. 7% was attained as against the targeted growth rate of 5. 2%.
◆Programmes like Integrated Rural Development Programme (IRDP) and Minimum Needs Programme (MNP) were started during this plan.
